Our Formica Countertop is beat up, is removing it my only option? As long as it is not water damaged beyond repair, then no you do not have to remove it. You can use kits & material recipes & methods of counter resurfacing by a company called Something Better Co. Your first step to countertop resurfacing is to remove all flaking areas if any. Follow by using a 60 grit sanding pad & do circular motions in a systematical manner throughout tops, & sides of formica counter back splash, etc. Clean thoroughly with denatured alcohol and your prep work will be complete. SBC teaches methods of following the contours of your existing counter with a 3/16” Bond Coat application, or adjust the depth up to an inch or have a edge style to be polished or attain a chiseled edge pop out, etc. The same options include going over tiled indoor / outdoor counters. The neat thing about this option is that having unlimited material options, you really can attain perfect matches of your favorite marble, granite, & any other natural stone. Doing it yourself allows much more time for intricate veining & coloring details that would otherwise be to costly from a contractors perspective.
Best Match Tip: take a trip to your local Marble or Granite Supply store & take pictures of your favorite slabs, print them out in color and use as a cheat sheet for veining and advanced colorations.
